Apple iPad - taking CMS access truly mobile

News - Thu, 04/15/2010 - 03:14

So the iPad has arrived, creating with its arrival a new market for devices that are small and easy-to-use enough to avoid carting your laptop around, but more usable than existing mobile devices.  Of course, you can argue that the disadvantages are precisely that you cannot put it in your pocket, and that it isn't as easy to use as a laptop with a proper keyboard and mouse.

That being said, the iPad has a growing set of business applications for it - the Apple App Store is being updated constantly with them.  And some of those are tools to allow business folk on the move to work on their content; the iPad will allow users to edit and view documents and work on them efficiently, given the screen size.

So what about its place in the CMS world?  The iPad of course has a browser, and using that you can access any of the web-based CMS repositories that support it; or (doing a thinly veiled plug here for our product) you can use a purpose-built UI that provides multiple repository access, such as our CARA product which leverages CMIS in order to provide functionality on any repository that supports CMIS - and that list is growing.

Why You Should Pay Attention to the Development of Orchard CMS

News - Wed, 04/14/2010 - 21:20

An Overview of the Orchard Open Source CMS While Orchard CMS is still in the initial phase of development, it is already looking like it could become a major open source CMS option for webmasters. Orchard CMS seems to be making headway on a weekly basis and has already created a solid community of developers. In a very un-Microsoft move, the Orchard CMS is being designed almost entirely based upon input from the .NET community. While there is still a lot of work ahead before the first stable release of the Orchard CMS, it is definitely a CMS to keep your eye on.

Fuzzle CMS brings Flash-sites to the masses

News - Wed, 04/14/2010 - 03:34

Fuzzle CMS (http://fuzzle-cms.com) is a promising Flash CMS developed by a group of Russian programmers.  The system is claimed to be an extra easy way for creating Flash websites thanks to visual content management. Note, Fuzzle’s website is also made with this CMS.

Advantages of Flash and HTML in one system

A content management system (CMS) is a set of tools that lets you create and maintain your website's content without knowing anything about programming. Fuzzle is a CMS for creating and managing Flash web sites that differs from regular HTML sites mainly by their presentational abilities: Flash technology allows incorporating complex animations and reach multimedia content. However, Flash sites are considered to have such disadvantages as longer time of development (therefore more cost), harder updating, bad search engines ranking. Fuzzle is breaking these stereotypes!

WYSIWYG site maintenance and other Fuzzle features

At the moment a stable version 3.6 of Fuzzle CMS is issued. It has the following main features:

  • multilinguality;
  • simple management (convenient visual editing is based on blocks placement );
  • design integration from a draft within 5 minutes (Flash knowledge is not required);
  • SEO support (HTML version auto generation, DeepLinking support);
  • continuously replenished Widget Store availability;
  • availability of a simple open API for external developers.

Today's Role of IT

News - Mon, 04/12/2010 - 17:47

The Register: "The place to start is to consider IT’s role in the grand scheme of things. If we sidestep the idea that everything is going to the cloud, and consider a more realistic scenario whereby a business may own and operate a certain set of core services (processes with a degree of privacy / IP, customer data, etc) and look to outsource their services (certain software apps, server/storage capacity etc), it’s relatively easy to see an emerging role for IT as an orchestrator, rather than sole custodian."

Saying goodbye to "Like that Idea"

News - Mon, 04/12/2010 - 02:47

Five years ago, my wife and I had a dream. Together, we wanted to start a blog called "Like that Idea" and so we registered the domain LikethatIdea.com. The idea for the WordPress blog was to have a site where we could identify and review neat ideas which we thought others would like to read about. The ideas came in the form of products, books, movies, services, and interesting article that we read ourselves. In the end though, we ran out of ideas to write about and the site never really took off.

By the time many of you read this post, Like that Idea will be never more. I'm currently working on wiping the site off the server. It's time to say goodbye to one of the few joint Internet projects that my wife and I worked on together. Instead, we'll use the time to work on our own personal projects as well as working jointly on the biggest project of our lifetime, our family. If you're wanting to purchase the domain, feel free to make us an offer.

Below the fold is a post I couldn't help but transfer from LikethatIdea.com over to this site. Thinking back at this moment in time still puts a smile on my face.

Seeking a cure for information overload

News - Fri, 04/09/2010 - 18:16

This week I have been thinking a lot about how poorly we manage data and information. The quality of the data and the lack of needed data has historically been an issue at work. We have focused a lot of our time on data mining but never really recognized that one day there would be too much data and information for our staff to sift through. Recently, our managers proposed two new data sources for the operational staff to review and I decided that it was time to hit the panic button that we're currently giving out more information to our workers than they can handle.

When a business presents too much information to their staff it is a lot like catching deer in your headlights. If the deer is too overwhelmed to run and you don't steer the car out of the way then no good can come to both car and deer. This is where I think we are at work and we're needing to slow things down a bit to give both driver and deer time to think about their next move. For the moment at least, I'm personally at a lost on how best to solve our issues with information overload.

Version 1.6 of gpEasy CMS was just released. The newest stable release of gpEasy includes feature enhancements focusing on usability and performance. New in Version 1.6

The newly enhanced admin interface shows users exactly which portions of their site are editable without the need to hunt through an assortment of hidden admin scripts. Administrators can simply browse their site as any normal user would, then select the editable elements within the page as needed. A new dynamic vertical menu outlines all editable areas and texts on every page.

For users without much experience with CSS or HTML, the ability to rearrange content was also introduced in version 1.6. Using drag 'n drop functionality, users can select elements within their theme and move them to different areas. Draggable areas include menus, content areas and gadgets imported from plugins.

A true inline preview option and more choices for menu displays were also added.

WordPress.tv: SEO Analysis Video

News - Tue, 04/06/2010 - 18:09

I usually stay clear of search engine optimization (SEO) discussions, but I think this video is worth your time. In the video, Corey Eulas teaches SEO tips, tricks, and best practices found to increase traffic from search engines. This talk includes examples with a look “under the hood” of a few actual sites owned by members of the audience. You will "discover how to enhance user experience and usability while making your site more search engine friendly".

It doesn't hurt to take Corey Eulas' advice and likely his tips will improve your chances for being ranked higher in the index pages of the search engines. However, I'm a firm believer that the number one tip for good SEO of your website is writing good content. Sure, you can tweak the code here and there and write the buzz words search engines may be looking for in order to help improve your site's listing in the search index. In the end though it's the quality of your content that will eventually win people over to your site.
